Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned amid massive protests and escalating violence. The unrest, initially sparked by student demonstrations against a controversial government job quota system, led to widespread calls for Hasina's resignation. The protests, which turned increasingly violent, have resulted in over 300 deaths since they began in July.
Following deadly clashes between protesters and security forces, Hasina left Bangladesh for India. The Chief of Army Staff, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, confirmed her resignation and announced that an interim government would be formed to restore order .
This marks a significant political upheaval for Bangladesh, as Hasina had been in power for over 15 years and had recently won a fourth consecutive term in an election boycotted by major opposition parties .
